Pressure on Renault and Nissan to leave Iran

A group of American activists is lobbying the French automaker Renault and its Japanese partner Nissan why they abandon activities in Iran, due to international suspicions that Tehran is developing a nuclear program.

In a open letter to Carlos Ghosn, the chief executive officer of the Renault-Nissan alliance, the group called United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) said: “Renault's business in the country directly finances the Tehran regime and its ability to illegally develop nuclear weapons, as well as to support a government that persecutes its own citizens”. While many international companies have fled the country, Renault doubled its production from 50 vehicles in 2010 to 93.578 in 2011, according to UANI. In the letter, the group also said it was "disturbing" that Nissan has won a billion-dollar contract to produce a new fleet of taxis in New York, at a time when the Japanese company continues to do business with Tehran. . UANI has sent similar letters to Peugeot Citroen and General Motors in recent months.
