Shutting down copper networks, starting from Brolo. Open Fiber's "100% True Fiber" project kicks off

we receive e we publish the following press release issued by Open Fiber.

È Brolo, in the province of Messina, one of the very first Italian municipalities to abandon copper to migrate towards the network of the future. The Sicilian village is in fact one of the first 4 centers from North to South selected in “100% Real Fiber”, the Open Fiber project aimed at incentivizing the switch-off of copper in the telecommunications infrastructure.

FIBER-TO-THE-HOME

Open Fiber has long since concluded work on the new fibre optic network in Brolo, which today reaches approximately 4.500 real estate units between homes, businesses, public offices and schools. The infrastructure is built with the FTTH technology (fiber-to-the-home(fiber optics laid inside buildings), the only solution capable of guaranteeing connection speeds of over 1 Gigabit per second. The main Open Fiber partner operators, together with local Internet Service Providers, are already marketing services on the ultra-fast network created: interested users can check the coverage of their address on the website openfiber.it, contact one of the available operators and choose your preferred tariff plan to start surfing at very high speed.

BUL PLAN

This is a strategic investment for the digitalization of the territories that does not weigh on the budget of the Municipality. The technological infrastructure, in fact, was financed with regional and state funds under the Ultra Broadband Plan (BUL) managed by Infratel Italia, a company of the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy, with the coordination of the Sicilian Region.

100% REAL FIBER

Brolo is among the first pilot municipalities for a series of factors. Above all: the wide coverage of the territory guaranteed by the new fiber optic network and the strong openness to digital innovation demonstrated by the community. The “100% True Fiber” project foresees in particular the synergy between the Municipality and Open Fiber to minimize user activation times, thus incentivizing the migration process from copper. Through a single authorization essential for the final pre-wiring of the real estate units of Brolo, the Municipality is relieved from issuing multiple requests with the reduction of the time required to obtain permits.

BROLO ULTRA-FAST

«The elimination of copper and the simultaneous laying of optical fiber represents a fundamental piece of the growth and modernization strategy that we wanted to provide with our administrative action. We will be able to guarantee – he states Joseph Laccoto, mayor of Brolo – ultra-fast connections for schools, offices and other municipal facilities, with significant economic savings for utility costs. But this intervention is not just a technical improvement: the installation of fiber optics is an integral part of our 360-degree development vision, which aims to make Brolo more modern, efficient and competitive. Technological innovation is not an isolated objective, but the engine that fuels the quality of public services and the daily life of citizens. We want a connected city, capable of offering simple and accessible digital solutions, which make everything easier and more immediate. I also think of the companies that now operate in the online commerce sector, but also of the tourists who come to Brolo: we must do everything possible to provide them with the highest performing network possible. I am sure that everyone, businesses and citizens, will benefit from a super-fast internet network».

MIGRATION TO FTTH NETWORKS

«With this project – he declares Paula Martinez, Head of Territorial Institutional Affairs Open Fiber – Open Fiber intends to offer its contribution to the process of switching off copper networks, demonstrating how much and how the spread of optical fiber contributes to the development of communities, especially those farthest from large centers and metropolitan areas. The migration process towards FTTH optical fiber networks is unfortunately proceeding slowly: without a specific regulatory push, the actual switching off of copper would be achieved well beyond the Gigabit connectivity targets set by Italy and the EU, nullifying all the efforts and technological investments that the country is making to achieve the objectives of the digital and ecological transition. We are starting from Brolo precisely to show that Italy is ready for the digital revolution».

OPEN FIBER THE CHOICE THAT REWARDS YOU

All residential users in Brolo will have an additional opportunity: those who activate an ultra-fast connection through Open Fiber's partner operators by June 30, 2025, will be able to receive a 100 euro voucher to convert into an Amazon.it Gift Card, a MediaWorld gift card or a fuel voucher. The deadline for requesting prizes is August 31, 2025. To access the initiative, simply check the coverage of your address on https://openfiber.it/vinci-buono-4/, choose a partner operator and activate your ultra-fast connection: installation completed, on https://openfiber.it/richiedi-buono-regalo/ the appropriate form must be filled out to generate the voucher. Finally, it is important to ensure that the installer applies the sticker with the code on the optical socket.

WHO IS OPEN FIBER FOR?

Open Fiber is the main Italian FTTH fiber optic operator and among the leaders in Europe. Being a wholesale only operator, it does not sell fiber optic services directly to the end customer, but makes its infrastructure available to all interested operators on equal terms.
