we receive e we publish the following press release issued by FS group.
It was returned to the city of Rome Piazza dei Cinquecento, after a major redevelopment project by the FS Italiane Group. The area, owned by FS Sistemi Urbani, represents the access to the Roma Termini station and extends for a length equal to eight football fields.
The redevelopment works were carried out by Anas (FS Group), as the implementing body, and are among the essential and non-deferrable works carried out on behalf of the Extraordinary Government Commissioner for the Jubilee, the Mayor of Rome. Roberto Gualtieri.
Together with the Mayor, the Undersecretary of State to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Alfredo Mantovano, and the Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of the FS Group, Stefano Antonio Donnarumma.
The intervention in Piazza dei Cinquecento has seen 80 thousand square meters of surface completely redeveloped with quality materials. 30 thousand square meters of marble and stone have been laid, 20 thousand square meters of cobblestones, 10 thousand square meters of architectural concrete, 10 thousand square meters of new garden areas and flowerbeds and 6 thousand square meters of asphalt.
The works included the reorganization of the greenery and removal of the kiosks and have favored the rationalization of urban spaces, improving safety conditions and encouraging pedestrians. Furthermore, the bus terminal has been redesigned with an area of 12 thousand square meters, of which 6 thousand with marble and 6 thousand with architectural concrete; a new taxi dock of 8 thousand square meters in cobblestones has been built and a new system of cycle paths and a pedestrian area of 5 thousand square meters in marble have been activated with the aim of making the space increasingly accessible.
The station entrance was gradually freed up, thus integrating with the architectural, archaeological and cultural profiles of the area, creating spatial continuity with the Baths of Diocletian, the Servian Walls, the Museum of Palazzo Massimo, up to Piazza della Repubblica. A work that aimed to enhance and increase the integration between monuments and surrounding archaeological areas, as well as improving the architectural and environmental quality of the entire context.
The works have been completed at 91%, excluding, to date, the 9% regarding the central part of the square, which until this morning has been used to maintain the operation of public transport services and pedestrian flows towards and away from Termini station. This area will be the subject of interventions during the Jubilee year and will be completed by the summer, ahead of schedule, which envisaged the completion of the second functional lot in 2026.
The redevelopment project has made the area where Roma Termini station is located more beautiful, green and even more liveable, the most important railway station in Rome, the largest in Italy in terms of traffic and among the main ones in Europe.
A work of which visitors will benefit in the jubilee year but also all passengers who will pass through the railway station for work or tourism reasons.
The widespread construction site concerned the redevelopment and surface arrangement of three areas for a total of 45 million euros and 540 days of work. The interventions concerning the perimeter of Piazza dei Cinquecento alone, an area of 45 thousand square meters, were started on October 9, 2023, for a total of approximately 21 million euros.
