IGAT, an Italian chemical company belonging to the SIAD Group, specialized in the production of industrial gases such as oxygen, nitrogen and argon, and EDP Energy Italy, the Italian division of the EDP group and European leader in distributed solar generation, have signed an agreement partnerships to achieve a photovoltaic system distributed generation (DG), the largest EDP in Italy integrated with a storage system.
The solar plant will be installed at the IGAT industrial site, in the province of Caserta, and will have a total capacity of 2,5 MWp, increasing flexibility in energy management and accelerating the decarbonization path. IGAT has recently obtained funding from the PNRR National Recovery and Resilience Plan for its “Green Hydrogen” project, which will produce green hydrogen through an electrolyzer powered by EDP's photovoltaic plant.
The solar system, which It is expected to be operational within the year, will consist of over 3.400 photovoltaic panels installed at IGAT facilities and will generate approximately 3,5 GWh of energy per year. In parallel, the storage system will have an installed capacity of 1 MWh, allowing excess energy produced to be stored during low demand periods and made available when needed. This capacity will allow energy to be stored for up to two hours at full power.
Thanks to this solution, the production site will reduce its dependence on the electricity grid and will benefit from a reduction of energy costs, breaking down at the same time the CO₂ emissions of over 1.100 tons per year, the equivalent of the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by over 7.000 trees.
Massimo Iorio, CEO of IGAT, explains: “Projects related to sustainability and environmental protection have become fundamental for our company, in line with the vision of the SIAD Group. The partnership with EDP, reliable and professional, allows us to consolidate our objectives. Clean energy offers economic and sustainability advantages, thanks to these initiatives our path towards greater environmental protection continues.”
“This project demonstrates EDP’s commitment to the energy transition in Italy and to providing sustainable and cost-effective solutions to our customers. We are proud to collaborate with the SIAD Group to support the decarbonization of a strategic industrial sector and help reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The integration of storage systems into decentralized generation is crucial to fully exploit renewable sources, ensure grid stability and increase energy independence. With almost 150 MWp of contracted capacity across Italy, EDP is promoting initiatives that bring lasting benefits to local communities and the environment,” he underlines. AntonioRicciardo, head of EDP's Client Solutions division in Europe.
IGAT, Industria Gas Tecnici SpA, founded in 1991, joined the SIAD Group in 2020. Strategically located in central-southern Italy, IGAT is one of the main producers of industrial cryogenic gases in the region. Thanks to its location, it can easily serve the main industrial settlements. To meet the needs of large customers, IGAT has continuously increased its production capacity.
EDP is actively involved in the development of solar and storage projects in Europe, working with clients ranging from small and medium-sized enterprises to large industrial companies.
This partnership represents a concrete step towards a sustainable energy transition, demonstrating how collaborations between large energy operators and industrial companies such as the SIAD Group, attentive to sustainable development, can accelerate the adoption of renewable sources and promote the implementation of more sustainable and responsible practices.
