Fincantieri, one of the world's leading groups in highly complex shipbuilding, and the Hera Group, one of the largest Italian multi-utilities operating in the environmental, energy and water sectors, announce the establishment of Circular Yard Srl, the newco aimed at creating, in the eight Italian shipyards of Fincantieri, an innovative integrated waste management system, also aimed at their valorization in the perspective of circular economy. In the future it is planned to expand the operations of the newco to other Fincantieri sites located abroad.
CircularYard, the new joint venture born following the Memorandum of Understanding signed in July 2024, further consolidates Fincantieri's commitment to increasingly responsible industrial practices, significantly contributing to the achievement of environmental sustainability objectives, reducing unsorted waste for disposal by 15% and promoting a circular economy in production plants. Thanks to the provision of specific know-how and skills by the Hera Group companies, CircularYard will introduce innovative and sustainable solutions, in order to guarantee greater control over suppliers and promoting transparency, safety and quality along the entire supply chain. Once fully operational, the newco is expected to process 100 thousand tons of industrial waste per year.
The details of the newco
CircularYard's shareholding structure is made up of 60% Hera Group and 40% Fincantieri. Hera Group will be present with Herambiente Servizi Industriali (HASI) at 55% and ACR di Reggiani Albertino SpA (ACR) with the remaining 5%, both companies controlled by Herambiente, among the main national operators in the environmental sector and among the first seven in Europe.
The newco's strategic initiatives
In particular, CircularYard will be responsible for overseeing the entire waste management process, with a specific focus on the operational management of plants for the recovery of management waste, disposal and recoverable residues. The company will employ personnel with many years of experience that will allow for better integration and efficiency of all the resources involved. The project will have two development phases, with the ultimate goal of managing almost 100 thousand tons per year of industrial waste produced in Fincantieri shipyards and increasing the recoverable fractions by 15% - in particular iron, wood, plastic and paper - already in the first year. In parallel, specific interventions will be studied that will allow the model to reach full capacity thanks to the creation of advanced plants - such as, for example, those for the treatment and reuse of water or for the recovery of copper - and optimized waste management.
Subsequently, the model will be brought to full operation thanks to the construction of treatment plants with cutting-edge technologies in Europe and the optimised management of waste. All this through a series of structural initiatives, always in the context of the circular economy, such as the design and construction of chemical-physical plants for the treatment and reuse of water, the expansion and redevelopment of temporary storage facilities with new selection areas and new copper recovery plants.
Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and General Manager of Fincantieri, commented: “The launch of the joint venture with a partner of absolute value such as the Hera Group adds a piece to our further commitment to the adoption of virtuous circular economy practices within our shipyards. In line with our industrial plan on operational excellence, CircularYard represents a project that combines complementary know-how and allows us to apply best practices and technological innovation in the management and valorization of waste and production scraps. The ultimate goal is to simultaneously pursue our targets on environmental sustainability and process efficiency in the name of responsible growth from both a sustainability and economic point of view, confirming Fincantieri's role as a world leader also in the adoption of new operating models in shipbuilding.”
Orazio Iacono, CEO of the Hera GroupSaid: "We are proud to put our high level of expertise, plant engineering excellence and long-standing professionalism in the circular waste management process at the service of the first Western shipbuilder, to promote the regeneration of urban and industrial areas. We are accelerating our path that will lead the Hera Group to become the driving force of the circular economy of the Italian industrial fabric, accompanying large companies in their environmental transition path with the reduction of production waste and maximum valorization in its recovery".
