Poste Italiane: the new anti-robbery cameras work

The Carabinieri arrested a robber in a small town in the province of Rieti thanks to one of the 938 new video surveillance systems installed since the beginning of the year

Since the beginning of the year, Poste Italiane has installed 938 video surveillance systems in 477 small Italian municipalities. In one of these - Belmonte, 627 inhabitants in the province of Rieti - in recent days the new cameras have allowed the Carabinieri to identify and arrest a robber.

Concern for safety, especially at post offices and Postamat, was one of the main issues highlighted by the mayors when, at the end of 2018, they started the collaboration launched by the Post Office with small municipalities.

The group led by Matteo Del Fante has made a commitment on 10 fronts: in addition to the installation of video surveillance systems, there are plans to install Wi-Fi networks (already 1.304 in 1.211 municipalities), ATM Postamat (the first 102 installed) and new mailboxes (1.817 in 1.278 Municipalities); then the removal of architectural barriers (to date 157 in 151 Municipalities) and the creation of a central office dedicated to dialogue with the mayors of Municipalities with less than 5 thousand inhabitants.

The robbery in Belmonte in Sabina, of about two thousand euros at the Post Office, took place in broad daylight, shortly after 13 pm on April 12, by a hooded man armed with a pistol (which later turned out to be a toy).
