Portal Ugo La Malfa at the start: writings, correspondence and speeches

A discordant voice, the critical conscience of a restless country: the Portal of Ugo La Malfa. In a conference to be held on Wednesday 10 November in Rome in the Parliamentary Groups Hall of the Chamber of Deputies, the portal of one of the protagonists of post-war Italian political history will be presented and open to public consultation, an online archive of the complete work of the statesman.

The event takes place in the presence of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, by the President of the Senate, Maria Elisabetta Alberti Casellati, by the President of the Chamber, Roberto Fico. Chaired by Professor Piero Craveri, President of the scientific committee of the Foundation. After the presentation of the project by Claudia La Malfa, director of the Portal, the Prime Minister takes the floor Mario Draghi. The conclusions, however, are entrusted to his son Giorgio La Malfa.

The Ugo La Malfa Portal is a multi-year project of the Ugo La Malfa Foundation for the integral digitization and collection in a special online site of the statesman's writings, speeches, correspondence and iconographic and audiovisual documents. It is a vast library and multimedia heritage on the life and political and institutional activity of one of the founders of the action party, of the founding fathers and among the major protagonists of the country's rebirth after the world war and the dictatorship.

Italian politician, anti-fascist, Ugo La Malfa redesigned Italian politics. Among the founders of Action party (1942), of which he became a representative in the CLN (1943), in 1946 he joined the Republican Party, of which he was secretary (1965-75). Deputy (since 1946) was, over the years, Minister of Transport, Foreign Trade in the first (1945-46), sixth (1950-51) and seventh (1951-53) De Gasperi cabinet, implementing a policy of trade liberalization. He was Budget Minister in the fourth Fanfani cabinet (1962-63), elected secretary of the Republican Party in April 1965 and as such supported the opportunity for a centre-left coalition. Confirmed party secretary in 1968 and 1971, he continued to carry out critical action towards the various reforms (university, health care, taxation) of the Rumor and Colombo governments, especially in relation to the economic situation. He abandoned his position as political secretary to assume that of president of the party (1975) and vice president of the Council in the fourth Moro government (1974-76). A lively supporter of an anti-inflationary policy based on the control of labor costs and public spending, La Malfa in the following years supported the entry of the PCI into the government majority. He fought for the regulatory intervention of the state in the economy and for the control of public spending and was a supporter of the centre-left.
