Ponte Morandi: Castellucci on trial with 58 other defendants, Aspi plea bargains for 30 million

For the collapse of the Morandi Bridge, Giovanni Castellucci, former CEO of Autostrade per l'Italia, and all the other 58 defendants in the proceeding will go to trial. The indictment was established by the judge for the preliminary hearing, Paola Faggioni. The first hearing of the trial has also been set, to be held on July 7th.

Aspi obtains the plea deal

The Gup also decided to accept the plea bargaining request from Autostrade per l'Italia and its subsidiary Spea (which was in charge of maintenance). The two companies will pay around 30 million euros to avoid trial. The prosecutor had given a favorable opinion on the plea deal.

The remains of the Morandi Bridge remain under seizure

Finally, the judge for the preliminary hearing decided to keep the remains of the Morandi bridge under seizure, but also to allow it to be moved. In this way, the Municipality will be able to complete the Memory Park.

The Morandi Bridge collapsed on August 14, 2018, killing 43 people.

The Committee for the Remembrance of the Victims

"We are very satisfied, to send all 59 defendants to trial means that the Public Prosecutor's Office has worked well - said Egle Possetti, president of the Morandi Bridge Victim Remembrance Committee - Today the confirmation of what we have been supporting for all this time has arrived . For this reason we are obviously very satisfied”.

Castellucci's lawyers

"We had no doubts about this outcome which unfortunately seemed obvious to us - say Castellucci's lawyers, Giovanni Paolo Accinni and Guido Carli Alleva - We believe that despite the judge's long motivational effort, in reality the issues that were at the basis of our reasons have remained unchanged ; therefore, the procedural problems that have arisen remain and will be the subject of further discussions”.
