Genoa bridge: clash over concession and reconstruction

“Autostrade will have another nasty surprise in the next few days. I don't let the person who collapsed it rebuild the bridge”. These are the words spoken by Luigi Di Maio, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development, during a visit to the Fiera del Levante in Bari. "As far as we are concerned - he added - the Morandi bridge must be reconstructed by a state company like Fincantieri, because we must monitor what will be done on the reconstruction of the bridge".

Not of the same opinion John Toti, governor of Liguria, who launches an appeal from the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio for the choice of the fastest solution for reconstruction: "We ask the government to immediately pass the decree to rebuild the bridge to allow us to get to work immediately as soon as the release from the Public Prosecutor's Office arrives".

According to Toti, “once demolished, the Autostrade company, as stipulated in the contract that binds it to the State, must rebuild the bridge as soon as possible to make it fungible. If Luigi Di Maio instead of announcing bad surprises for Autostrade announced good surprises for Genoa and Liguria, I think he would do his job more effectively ”.

Toti spares no criticism even of the Minister of Labour, Danilo Toninelli, who had attacked him on Twitter in the morning, inviting him to worry "about getting the displaced people back home to recover their personal belongings and to give them new accommodation and not to engage in politics on Genoa". The Governor's reply was not long in coming: “Toninelli should worry about something else than what Toti does. He should take care of the ministry of him, since the composition of the commission appointed by him rotates faster than in a football match ”.

As for the concession, a note from the Presidency of the Council he clarifies that the decision will be taken without any ideological prejudice: "We must work to ensure that public goods are administered as efficiently as possible - reads a note - ensuring the greatest return to the community".

But then Di Maio specified: “In Italy there are three entities that manage the motorways: Aspi, Gavio and Toto. If we talk about bringing the motorways back into competition, there are two possibilities: either they return to Aspi and it's crazy or we let ourselves be colonized. So they necessarily have to go back to the State and for two reasons: fewer tolls and all the money from the tolls we put into maintenance instead of into Benetton's pockets".

Meanwhile, the news has arrived resignation of Bruno Santoro, investigated in the Genoa investigation. Santoro was part of the inspection commission appointed by Toninelli to establish the causes of the collapse of the Morandi bridge.

For his part, the minister announced the launch of a mapping of critical infrastructures throughout Italy to intervene where needed: "I am thinking, for example, of the state in which the A24 and A25 are found", he specified.

Finally, the Prosecutor of Genoa gave the go-ahead for the installation of sensors for monitoring the two remaining sections of the bridge. The clearance was an indispensable step for the start of the works, given that the area was sequestered.
