Genoa bridge: here are the names of the suspects for the collapse

Eight Autostrade executives under investigation, three officials from the Ministry of Transport - Professor Antonio Brencich and two other members of the technical committee of the Superintendency are also under investigation, who in February gave a positive opinion on the retrofitting of the viaduct - Governor Toti and architect Renzo Piano present the project of the new bridge.

Once the last warranty notices were also delivered, the Genoa Public Prosecutor's Office announced the names of the iinvestigated for the collapse of the Morandi Bridge which claimed the lives of 43 people.

We recall that the 20 names under investigation they are all responsible for Autostrade per l'Italia, its subsidiary Spea engineering, the Ministry of Infrastructure, the Superintendency for Public Works of Liguria, Piedmont and Val d'Aosta. The investigation also involves the Autostrade company as the responsible body.

The accusations are heavy: multiple manslaughter, manslaughter and multiple vehicular manslaughter. The two companies in particular (Spea is added to Aspi) are liable for multiple manslaughter aggravated by non-compliance with the anti-accident legislation.

Going back to the names  eight Autostrade executives are under investigation:

  • John Castellucci, CEO,
  • Stefano Marigliani, director of the First Section of Genoa,
  • Paolo Strazzullo e Riccardo Rigacci, manager of the First Section of Genoa,
  • Paul Berti, Central Director of Operations,
  • Michele Donferri, maintenance manager,
  • Mario Bergamo, former director of maintenance of Autostrade,
  • Massimo Meliani, responsible for bridges and tunnels.

As far as the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is concerned, the suspects include the heads of the Supervisory Unit:

  • Vincent Cinelli, general manager,
  • Mauro Coletta, former general manager,
  • Bruno Santoro, head of the technical-operational division of the motorway network.

The professor is also in the register of suspects Antonio Brencich, former member of the MIT inspection commission on the collapse of the Morandi bridge, who resigned at the end of August. Brencich, according to reports from Ansa, he is under investigation, such as Mario Servetto and Roberto Ferrazza. The three were part of the technical committee of the Public Works Authority which in February gave a positive opinion to the viaduct retrofitting project presented by Autostrade.

Finally, the Prosecutor's Office also put it under investigation Emanuele De Angelis e Maximilian Giacobbi of Spea, Fulvio Di Taddeo of Autostrade, the collaborators of Ferrazza Sbreeder Bonaccorso e Joseph Sisca e Carmine Head, head of the Inspection Bureau.

The chief prosecutor Francesco Cozzi also announced: “Shortly we will ask for the probative incident. Registration is done precisely at the same time due to the need to carry out a guaranteed deed”. Cozzi specified that it is not excluded that the list could get longer: "at the moment the list is this, then if further profiles emerge from the continuation of the investigations this will be evaluated, even possibly in the course of a probative incident as required by the code".

At the same time, while the prosecution's investigations go on, the project for the new bridge signed by the architect, Renzo Piano, was presented in Genoa.

“By October 2019, November at the latest, Genoa will have a new bridge over the Polcevera stream”. This was announced by the president of the Liguria Region and emergency commissioner Giovanni Toti. “The new Morandi cannot be a normal bridge, given the pain it has caused, we want to build a symbol for the future of the city. The Piano project represents Ligurian essentiality rich in meaning, it will be built quickly”.

“This bridge will have to last a thousand years and must be made of steel” explained Renzo Piano when presenting his project. “Of course, there is something of a ship in this project. Because there is something of Genoa”.

The top management of Arcelor Mittal, the new owners of Ilva, "have said they are willing to supply the steel essential for the reconstruction of the Morandi bridge," announced Toti. The steel will be processed by the Ilva plant in Genoa Cornigliano.
