A quarter of Italians have chosen to enjoy a weekend holiday, many who will go to the beach - The per capita budget is over 400 euros, but the weather, price increases and inflation are hindering the projects

Do you already have your bags in the car or did you already leave on Thursday evening? It has arrived yet another bridge of this 2023 full of holiday and relaxation opportunities. According to Confcommercio they will be 14,9 million Italians who will take advantage of the June 2 long weekend for a mini-holiday out of town. According to Federalberghi, the number of people who will take advantage of the Republic Day for a long weekend of relaxation, culture or other activities will even reach 15,2 million. The result is pretty much the same: almost a quarter of Italians he will leave to go somewhere together with friends or family and unplug.

Long weekend of 2 June: budget over 400 euros, turnover of 6-7 billion

The traders' association estimates 14,9 million Italian tourists traveling around Italy. Many have booked in advance and have already left, others are deciding what to do in these hours. The average budget is around 400 euros per capita for Confcommercio and 450 euros for Federalberghi, for a turnover total that is between 6 and 7 billion euros, a figure substantially in line with the rest of the past "bridges" of 2023. 

"The recovery is there. People want to move and plan their vacation well in advance to do so. The last minute is no longer so fashionable: we want to guarantee the best, perhaps by staying in our own country, facing an occasion such as the June 2 long weekend, considering that this year the calendar drops the holiday on Friday ”, says Bernabò Bocca, president of Federalberghi.

Long weekend of 2 June: where will the Italians go?

Almost all, 94% to be exact, will stay in Italy opting either for seaside resorts or close to home. 

Both according to Federalberghi and according to Confcommercio the vast majority of travellers opted for the sea, chosen by 36% of the interviewees. According to the hoteliers' association, 26% then chose the cities of art and almost 13% preferred the mountains. 

Long weekend of 2 June: everyone on holiday by car

The car remains the preferred means of transport, chosen by 3 out of 4 holidaymakers, even at the risk of being stuck in traffic. The plane will be used by 10,4% of tourists. “It is surprising to note – says Confcommercio – how, despite the rather short average length of the trip planned – 67% of the sample will be away from home for a maximum of 1 or 2 nights – 1 out of 2 Italians has chosen, as a destination, a place outside his region of residence and even 1 out of 10 a foreign destination”.

Inflation, price increases and the weather are the 3 obstacles to relaxation

Confcommercio underlines how the propensity to leave that the Italians demonstrate today is lower, by about 4 percentage points, than that declared just a month ago for the same anniversary, also due to the uncertainty of the weather which could discourage departures. In many places in Italy a rainy weekend, previsions that have prompted many Italians to stay at home.

The choices for the bridge also influenced inflation and price increases. According to Federalberghi almost 50% of tourists have decided to reduce the budget allocated for the holiday due to the increase in price. What will you spend more on? For food, which absorbs 30% of the expected expenditure. Followed by travel expenses (20%), accommodation (28%) and shopping at 9%.
