Politecnico Milano and companies united for research on hydrogen

A united front for the decarbonization. With this objective in mind, the new joint research platform for the development of technologies related to thehydrogen between the Polytechnic Foundation of Milan and Politecnico di Milano together with Edison, Eni e Snam. The intent is to boost the creation of a hydrogen supply chain in Italy, to promote the competitiveness of companies and the growth of high tech companies; The Hydrogen Joint Research Platform is open to all companies that want to experiment with the research and development of products and services on hydrogen with the support of the Italian technical university and its laboratories.

In detail, Hydrogen JRP aims to promote innovative studies and research in various fields: production of clean hydrogen, which includes green and "low carbon" hydrogen; solutions for its transport and related advanced accumulation systems; innovative electrochemical and thermal uses in residential, industrial and transport applications; development of best practices for the design and construction of infrastructure for the transport and storage of hydrogen.

Furthermore, to increase its impact, the platform will make use of an advisory board, i.e. a strategic consultative body, which will involve the main institutional and international stakeholders, to create interest and attract investments. The membership of the JRP of other companies interested in the development of the hydrogen supply chain will be confirmed in the coming months. The structure of the platform envisages that the members, on the basis of their level of membership, propose vertical research topics that favor the creation of know-how for the entire national sector.

Ferruccio Resta and Andrea Sianese, respectively rectum of the Polytechnic and president of the Polytechnic Foundation, explained that the sense and objective of the initiative is to position the Polytechnic as an interlocutor in the "accompanying phase of the industrial system and as a point of reference in technological terms within the international panorama”. In the awareness that hydrogen is destined to play an important role in the energy transition, also thanks to the funds allocated to it in the Pnrr elaborated by the Italian government.

An approach that meets the interest of companies such as Eni and Snam that are particularly committed to the transition front.

The announcement of the research agreement comes on the same day that theEuropean Clean Hydrogen Alliance announced a series of projects, 750 in all, ranging from production to use in industry, transport, energy and construction. More than six hundred projects will be operational by 2025, the industry commissioner indicated Thierry Breton. Various Italian companies are involved in projects involving the national territory such as Enel, Sit, Seicos, Sapio, Rosetti Marino, Solvay Chimica Italia, Snam, Società Gasdotti Italia, Aecom, Nextchem, Fincantieri, Fnm, Edison, Snam. Stellantis participates in projects in which Italy, France and Germany are interested.

The European Clean Hydrogen Alliance was established by the Commission in July 2020, in support of the hydrogen strategy, with the aim of stimulating the uptake of clean hydrogen production and use in Europe.
