PNRR and geothermal energy, a gap to be filled

Criticisms from Tuscany but appreciations from Turkey highlight the role of a clean source useful for the ecological transition of Draghi and Cingolani which has not yet found space in the PNRR

PNRR and geothermal energy, a gap to be filled

Appreciations and shortcomings. There Italian geothermal and its supply chain are in the midst of a strategic contradiction. While from Yenader digital summit – Association that observes the world of renewables in Turkey – positive judgments and an international example arrive, the Italian PNRR it forgets to give space to the privileged energy source of the subsoil. At the moment it is not excluded that the European Commission will deal with it in the coming weeks. The PNRR should have recognized a role for the source chosen primarily from a large area of Tuscany. And from here came the legitimate criticisms of the government for having omitted the added value of a tested system. A case to be remedied in the green strategy of Minister Roberto Cingolani. Even more so if we consider that Enel has been using geothermal energy for some time in its network and continues to make investments. The State should encourage their use and research to exploit an enormous natural potential.

A document was sent to the Minister in which he complains that the Plan sent to Brussels "does not dwell in any way - positive or negative - on the single renewable source that Italy has been able to exploit first in the world, feeding in the last two centuries an industrial chain with know-how recognized globally”. In support - if it were not known in Rome - we cite the example of the province of Siena where since 2011 92% of the electricity produced comes from the heat of the subsoil. The match concerns an entire industrial chain which according to Yenader places Italy and Tuscany among the examples to be imitated in the world. Perhaps more than Iceland or some American states.

THEItalian Geothermal Union he doesn't sit still and watch a paradox of the Draghi government's green revolution. The salient points of the transition have been discussed for weeks and an attempt has been made to keep the most disparate needs together. The European funding chapter is not overlooked by any of the parties interested in making Italy walk the path of decarbonization. However, it must be remembered that the geothermal configuration of the Italian territory offers good opportunities for the production of clean electricity. For decades, and if not challenged, it has also offered many other perspectives for direct uses of heat on a large scale. Why deprive ourselves of it?

The controversies about the intensive exploitation of the subsoil and the consequent "opening" of discussion tables with committees and associations have also greatly attenuated the controversies about the production and capture systems. Let's face it. The fact that Italy intends to achieve the objectives of carbon neutrality by 2050, respecting the EU indications, contemplates the need to have available for the next few years a mix of renewables and fossils. Without this truth the country will not move forward. All over the world the economic accounts of the production of green energies are in a structural phase compared to those of traditional energies.

We expect concrete and immediate actions from the Government to fill the legislative vacuum that this sector complains about, says the Italian Geothermal Union. For this we intend to intervene at the European Commission, which has the task of evaluating the Plan received, to express the reasons for our dissent. The government obviously has time to remedy this, since the European passages that precede the first funds are not very strict. Even on funding, the game is political. Because the reason why the first Conte government excluded geothermal energy from the incentives guaranteed to other renewable sources has not yet been understood. The current government does not tolerate comparisons with the previous ones and this case can be resolved with wisdom and industrial recognition of a convenient source. For the Turkish industrialists of renewables, Tuscany, by continuing to exploit the vapors of the earth, is creating a model of electricity generation, of use in agricultural greenhouses, in thermal uses, in heating to be taken as a model. It sucks to lecture on something we should be proud of. For this reason we believe that the gaps will soon be compensated by the appreciations of our home.
