Eni and the Texas battery storage system

The plant is located in the southwest texas, in Webb County, about 20 kilometers from the city of Laredo. Guajillo has a ccapacity of 200 MW and is equipped with Lfb lithium ion batteries (lithium iron phosphate), capable of efficiently storing electricity produced by generation plants and making it available when market demand is greatest.

The plant was built next to one of Plenitude's largest operating solar parks, “Corazon Solar Farm”, also to maximize operational synergies and consolidate the company's presence in the area, where it operates on a total area of approximately 800 hectares, explains Plenitude in a note.

The plant is expected to enter into commercial operation in half of the 2025. “Guajillo will have an important role for the stability of the local electricity grid, thus contributing to the efficiency of the energy system of the entire region, which is experiencing a very strong growth in electricity generation from renewable sources,” the company says. “Large lithium-ion batteries are a rapidly expanding technology, which enables an ever-increasing penetration of renewable energy into electricity systems,” the note continues.

“The completion of Guajillo positions Plenitude at the forefront of this sector as well and consolidates our presence in the large US renewable energy market, where we have achieved 1,5 GW of installed capacity” said Patrick Monino, head of Plenitude Renewables North America and managing director of Eni New Energy US.
