After the 4-hour protest called last June 18, the air transport unions are back on the attack and announce a uno 24 hour general strike for Tuesday 6th July. The protest will involve many airlines, risking creating many inconveniences for travelers departing and arriving that day. Filt Cgil, Filt Cisl, Uiltrasporti and Ugl Transport by plane speak of a protest "in defense of the workers of Alitalia, Air Italy, Ernest, Blue Panorama, Air Dolomiti, Norwegian and all foreign airlines based and employed in our country".
Air transport is indeed one of the sectors hardest hit by the Covid-19 emergency. The pandemic has blocked national and international travel, causing the turnover of major companies around the world to collapse. The pandemic also came at a time when some companies, including Alitalia and Air Italy, were already facing a period of crisis and profound transformation, with strong repercussions for workers.
Through a joint note, the trade union associations therefore declared their firm intention to also side with "the workers of all foreign airlines based and employed in our country, and of airport management, handling and catering companies and all the seasonal and precarious workers of the sector”.
“At the basis of the strike – they continue – the outright opposition to layoffs in the industry, one of the hardest hit by the pandemic, the request for a permanent inter-ministerial meeting place and the establishment of a control room to guarantee social stability, ensuring social safety nets, the launch of a reform to guarantee the reorganization of the airport system, the application of labor rules that provide for the same regulatory and salary treatments under the same operating conditions and the refinancing of the extraordinary air transport fund”.
