Pirelli, the first “forest free” tire in the world

Pirelli continues at a brisk pace towards increasingly sustainable production. The latest example is the launch of a new line of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified tyres, ie considered suitable from the point of view of respectful management of the forests from which the raw materials are extracted. The new P ZERO tyre, designed for the new BMW X5 xDrive45e Plug-In Hybrid, contains 100% natural rubber and rayon obtained from certified plantations. FSC certification confirms that the plantations are managed in order to preserve biological diversity and bring benefits to the lives of local communities and workers, while ensuring economic sustainability. The complex FSC chain of custody certification process verifies that certified material has been identified and separated from non-certified material along the processing chain from the plantation to the tire manufacturer.

In addition to being ecological, the P ZERO tire also has high technical performance, to meet the needs of the latest model of the German company for which it is intended: it will be produced according to the Perfect Fit strategy, which allows you to limit fuel consumption of the vehicle and the related emissions into the atmosphere. Added to this is a low noise emission with just as many environmental benefits. Production will take place exclusively in the Pirelli factory in the United States, to be precise in Rome, Georgia.

“Before getting on the road – he commented Giovanni Tronchetti Provera, son of the managing director Marco Tronchetti Provera and SVP Sustainability and Future Mobility of Pirelli -, sustainable mobility starts with raw materials. With the production of the first FSC-certified tire in the world, Pirelli once again demonstrates its commitment to pursuing increasingly challenging objectives in terms of sustainability and bears witness to the constant work on innovative materials and increasingly cutting-edge production processes. We continue to invest in sustainable growth for the planet, aware that this is also essential for the future of our businesses".

“We congratulate Pirelli – added Jeremy Harrison, Chief Markets Officer of FSC International – for its commitment to responsible sourcing and for demonstrating that a transparent supply chain for natural rubber it is possible, from small owners to the market”.
