Pirelli and Politecnico Milano: renewed research programme

Pirelli, Politecnico di Milano e Polytechnic Foundation renew the "Joint Labs" research program focused on research projects for the continuous technological innovation of tyres. 10 years after the first signing, the collaboration is extended for another three, with new objectives and innovative tools: the development of tires with virtual reality, of innovative materials and technologies for a sustainable mobility.

This new phase ofagreement (2021-2023), envisages a total investment of over 2 million euros, focuses on two macro-strands of research: the Materials area, with the development of innovative solutions and the modeling of mixing processes, and the Product Development area Cyber, with integrated static-dynamic simulation and innovative modelling.

In particular, there are five departments of the Milanese University involved in the activities envisaged by the agreement, such as mechanics; chemistry, materials and chemical engineering; mathematics; electronics, information and bioengineering; civil and environmental engineering. And the researchers will be engaged in the following thematic areas: simulation, low environmental impact materials and product and cyber development.

Furthermore, in support of professional training, the second level university master "R&D Excellence Next" was recently inaugurated, conceived in collaboration with the Milan Polytechnic, which involves 34 young engineers who have just been hired by the company, with the aim of training highly specialized engineers . An evolution of the professional path which over the years has contributed to the success of the joint projects carried out.

"Driving simulators, virtual reality and new materials: the central points of a ten-year agreement, the one between the Milan Polytechnic and Pirelli, which is renewed under the banner of common objectives, in step with technological innovation, attentive to development sustainable,” he said Ferruccio Stay, Rector of the Milan Polytechnic -. Research and training are the preconditions for an industrial development that looks to the future. The agreement between Politenico di Miano and Pirelli is solid and it is in this direction that we intend to continue”.

Marco Tronchetti Provera, Executive Vice Chairman and CEO Pirelli, underlined how being able to count on the Politecnico “means investing to meet the future challenges of mobility. Attention to all aspects related to sustainability, the evolution of automation, virtualization and connectivity are priorities on which we are committed. The collaboration with the Polytechnic confirms our commitment to strengthening the core of our group's know-how in these areas in Italy".

“Today we're talking about sustainable mobility: this agreement aims to consolidate lasting relationships for long-term investments, which allow for advanced research with highly experimental and innovative content. Strategic partnerships like this create a constant dialogue between business and university in order to share needs, strategies and vision", he added Andrea Sianesi, president of the Milan Polytechnic Foundation.
