The program agreement for the redevelopment of the Piombino industrial center has been signed. This was announced in a press conference at Palazzo Chigi by the undersecretary for economic development, Claudio De Vincenti. -”We have signed the program agreement for Piombino – said De Vincenti – it is a fundamental step in giving workers and citizens a future”.
The agreement was signed by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Economic Development, the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Labor and Social Policies, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, the Ministry of the Environment and the Protection of the Land and Sea , state property agency, the Tuscany region, the province of Livorno, the municipality of Piombino, the Port Authority of Piombino and the national agency for attracting investments.

“We have the hope and determination to rebuild the area immediately, within two to three years we want a new steel production in Piombino,” said the president of the Tuscany Region, Enrico Rossi, at the press conference. “Today closes a long and glorious industrial history, we want to open a new one. We want to continue making the longest tracks in Europe”.

Entering Palazzo Chigi for the signing of the agreement at 18 pm, President Rossi underlined that “It is not a day to be satisfied with: today the closure of the Piombino blast furnace begins and it is a dramatic moment of collapse. We have death in our hearts." “The agreement – ​​explained Rossi – serves to relaunch the hopes of Piombino and give the prospect of replacing the hot area with more advanced technology. A need for relaunch on which the government and the region agree".

The agreement envisages maintaining the workforce through solidarity contracts, with a part of layoffs for related companies, which will be layoffs by way of derogation for small companies. At an economic level, the commitment is 270 million euros. The fate of around 2500 people who work for Lucchini and Lucchini Servizi and another 1500 related workers depend directly on the factory.
