Picasso, his ceramics at auction in London

One hundred and fifty lots in a catalog entitled "Important Ceramics by Pablo Picasso from a Private Collection including Modern and Contemporary Prints", accompanied by some modern art prints always from the same private collection.

Working on ceramics was a way for Pablo Picasso to explore creative boundaries and challenge himself in an innovative way. In 1946 he began a collaboration with the Madoura ceramic laboratory in Vallauris, a small village in Provence near Cannes in France, and the following year with the owners of the atelier, Suzanne and George Ramié, he began a real production of ceramics that also closely interested Matisse and the "Fauves" group. Picasso like Matisse began by painting and decorating plates, vases and mugs and giving them a meaning that was anything but artisanal with a few significant signs typical of the Master.

It was for him a great opportunity to better understand his versatility as a complete artist, able to merge his creativity from painting to sculpture, through drawing and engraving. Over the following years, the artist created several thousand unique pieces, he himself was aware that that material medium, clay, was something similar to him. His ceramics are the expression of his own spontaneity and ingenuity.

This selection of over 100 ceramics includes: plates, vases, jugs, bowls and tiles depicting a range of classical and mythic forms, and portraits of animals and humans.
