The reassurances of the Fed and of the same US president Joe Biden they weren't enough to appease that one feeling of deja vu that investors are experiencing following the bankruptcy of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank. "Lehman Brothers was something else”, economists and regulators repeat over and over again. And perhaps this is precisely the reason why today's stock market meltdown will not enter the history books. Because despite all the difficulties, even recently, we have seen worse. Two examples above all: the explosion of the pandemic in Italy and Brexit. Today's red is intense, but it's not among the 10 worst lived in Piazza Affari in recent decades. Let's go over them one by one.

Piazza Affari: from Covid to Lehman Brothers, the worst sessions of the Ftse Mib

It was Monday 12 March 2020 and the Covid-19 pandemic was terrorizing the entire world. That same day the ECB had announced the economic measures to deal with the emergency, while a few days earlier the Conte government had imposed unprecedented restrictions on Italy. In a single session, the Ftse Mib burned over 3 thousand points, achieving the worst session in its history with a drop of 16,92%. However, it cannot be said that it was a total surprise, given that there had already been a taste: only 3 days before, Friday March 9, Piazza's main price list had closed trading with a reduction by 11,17% to 18.475 basis points, black jersey at world level, third worst crash ever. 

In between, on second step of a podium nightmare, another day that few will have forgotten: the 24 June 2016. Just 24 hours earlier, citizens of the United Kingdom had gone to the polls for the referendum on Brexit, voting in favor of leaving the European Union and changing the history of the old continent. The unexpected victory of Leavenworth it caused a real panic selling on the markets, with Piazza Affari losing 12,48% of its value.

Fourth place for the sitting of 6 October 2008, the day in which the Ftse Mib lost 8,24% of its value and the world stock exchanges saw almost 445 billion euros volatilize. At the base of the meltdown a bogeyman who has come to the surface in the last few days. Three weeks earlier it had gone bankrupt Lehman Brothers and economies around the world had begun to show the effects that the largest bankruptcy in world history had already begun to cause. In the following months, the Milan Stock Exchange set other negative records: 10 October 2008 (-7,14%, sixth worst session since 1992), 16 October 2008 (-6,78%, octave worst session).

From 11/2011 to the XNUMX economic crisis
