Piaggio, Honda, Ktm and Yamaha: consortium for batteries

Maxi agreement on electric batteries for mopeds: it was signed by Piaggio, Honda, Ktm and Yamaha, following the letter of intent of last March 1st. Thus it was born Swappable Batteries Motorcycle Consortium (SBMC), which mainly aims to solve the problems concerning range, charging times, infrastructure while pursuing four main objectives: development of common technical specifications for interchangeable battery systems, verification of the possibility of sharing battery systems , definition and promotion of the common specifications to be proposed as standard to the European and international standardization bodies and extension of the adoption of the common specifications of the Consortium at a global level.

“Urban mobility – comments Michele Colaninno, Chief of strategy and product of the Piaggio Group – is going through a delicate moment of transition towards electrification. The availability of charging stations varies between different countries, and the information available to end users is still very limited. Piaggio, Honda, Ktm and Yamaha have decided to found the Consortium precisely to incentivize the decision makers responsible for the development and implementation of the recharging infrastructure and to promote the adoption of light electric vehicles". The aim is therefore to promote the large-scale deployment of light electric vehicles such as motorized mopeds, scooters, motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles, and incentivize more sustainable battery lifecycle management in line with international climate policies.
