#ChangeGesto: Philip Morris against abandoned cigarette butts

Smoking is harmful to health, but also to the environment. The #CambiaGesto campaign stops in Rome on Saturday 19 September at 15.00 pm, at the Aqueduct Park. A day dedicated to the environment and civic sense, aimed at making citizens aware of the dispersion of cigarette butts on the ground. A social problem too often underestimated, but which causes irreversible damage.

The event will take place on the occasion of WorldClaenUpDay2020, an initiative that every year involves citizens of 150 countries in cleaning up abandoned waste, and the tenth anniversary of the Retake foundation, partner of the campaign.

The initiative, promoted and financed by Philip Morris Italy, with the support of H+, ERICA – a cooperative society that deals with environmental communication and planning – and Retake, encourages the adoption of virtuous and sustainable behaviors for the environment, leveraging the sense of individual responsibility.

After Palermo, Florence, Salerno, Livorno and Bari, the campaign also arrives in Rome, on Saturday 19 September, with an invitation for the entire nation to change its gestures to preserve the environment and the beauty of our landscapes. I am over 50 volunteers who participated in the campaign, with the collaboration of the institutions and over 10 local associations. Thanks to their commitment, around 250 cigarette butts have been spared the environment.

In the coming months, the tour will continue in the cities of Padua (5-24 October), Vercelli (October 26 – November 14), Genoa (November 16-29) and Bologna (December 1-20), with the aim of continuing to make civil society aware of the importance of small but fundamental gestures to protect the environment that surrounds us, including through collection and cleaning activities in cities, together with the distribution of pocket ashtrays to adult smokers.

These are small wastes, but if they are not managed correctly, they can pollute the marine and terrestrial ecosystem. An undifferentiated waste, mainly made up of non-biodegradable materials, which should not even be thrown down the sinks or toilets, contrary to what happens.
