Peru this month will send a delegation to Asia - Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and China - to illustrate and magnify the virtues of its national drink, pisco. Who knows if the Italian grappa producers decide to make some forays into the markets of the future.
Based on the vine, like brandy, pisco isn't widely known, except in South America (or North America, as a 'pisco sour', a cocktail that makes use of egg white, lime juice, and a bittering agent ). The vine arrived at the time of the Spanish conquest, with Canary vines, and thrived well in the coastal valleys of southern Peru (it's too hot in the north).
Peru's food promotions don't end there. Peru is in first place in South American pastry, and the bread and pastry Olympics will be held next month, from 3 to 7 March, in France: the 'Bakery World Cup'. Peru will have to contend not only with last year's podium – France, Taiwan and Italy – but also with Sweden, Poland, Holland, the USA, Japan, Korea, Senegal and Costa Rica.
