For Intesa Sanpolo, artificial intelligence is called Lisa, the new Machine Learning for surveillance

It bears the reassuring name of Lisa, but has a complex acronym: Linguistic Intelligence for Supervisory Awareness and is the Machine Learning tool that helps to read and quickly process thousands of publications on Banking Supervision designed and initiated by the Group Supervisory Strategic Steering Department, Area Chief Institutional Affairs and External Intesa Sanpaolo Communication led by Stefano Lucchini.
The Milanese institute has introduced "Artificial Intelligence in numerous activities and has launched applied research projects in the sector thanks also to the collaboration with important centers of excellence" says a note, "with the aim of providing the Group, customers and to the territories where increasingly efficient, innovative and safe services operate.” The Rimini AI Week awarded the program the John McCarthy Award "Manager + AI Success Stories".

Chiaradonna: we have identified an effective solution in Artificial Intelligence

" Banking Supervision it is an area in which we can rightly speak of information overload, with a truly massive and exponential production of content” said Walter Chiaradonna, Executive Director – Group Supervisory Strategic Steering. “Well before others, we have identified in Artificial Intelligence one effective solution to analyze the amount of information and data, finding excellent results over time, after an appropriate run-in".

That's what Lisa can do

In detail, Lisa, (also designed in collaboration with the Chief Data, AI, Innovation and Technology Area, led by Massimo Proverbio, and PWC,) helps to read and process quickly thousands of publications on Banking Supervision fed by selected sources, such as Institutions, think tanks and consultancy firms. Lisa uses algorithms NLP (Natural Language Processing) to read texts at an infinitely higher speed than humans and analyzes them to identify patterns of meanings, searches for correlations in an objective mode and has demonstrated remarkable "predictive capabilities", which can highlight future trends, connections well in advance not obvious until a few years ago and now taken for granted, such as those between climate change and credit risk.

The role of human intelligence

"A dedicated team develops analyzes aimed at increasing Lisa's attention and awareness both on Banking Supervision and on issues that are believed to become relevant in the future," the note explains. "L'human intelligence plays a decisive role in the interaction with Lisa, also for the purpose of validating the results and therefore of the continuous improvement of potential, and the machine allows Intesa Sanpaolo experts to have a broader view, useful for defining a strategic horizon for understanding trends and evolutions.

Also the European Central Bank has equipped itself with Artificial Intelligence tools (SupTech) to speed up and make supervision more effective, which is based, among other things, on reading and analyzing a growing amount of data and information, such as the minutes of the Boards of Directors or the thousands of datasets and documents that each of the over 100 significant supervised banks must produce.
