For events and conferences, Milan is named the first in Europe
One of the most controversial issues in the economics of major events lies in a simple question. The game is worth the candle? For example, do the Olympics make the country that organizes them spend more than it earns with tickets and rights? The question arises for major sporting events – not just the Olympics – and also for non-sporting ones, such as the Expo. And the responses have been many and varied.
In most cases, to make ends meet we console ourselves with repercussions of image and prestige. However, there are also indirect monetary effects that should be taken into account. For example, Milan has just been nominated by 'Pacific World', a body that deals with the organization of major events (from cardiac surgery congresses to various trade fairs), as the 'number 1' destination in Europe (In the USA it is Miami and in Asia Seoul). The 'Destination Index' placed Milan on the European podium due to the infrastructural and hotel improvements triggered by the preparation for Expo 2015.
