Pensions: inflation below zero and revaluations blocked

The hypothesis of a halt to pension increases for 2016 is becoming increasingly concrete – Behind this eventuality is the negative data of the Foi index, used to periodically adjust pensions and rents – It could also happen for pensioners under 1500 euros to even lose a few euros on the January 2016 check

Pensions: inflation below zero and revaluations blocked

Inflation below zero could block the revaluation of pensions for the next year. In fact, going to see theFoi index, which is the consumer price index for blue-collar and white-collar families net of tobacco, used by Istat to periodically adjust monetary values such as rents and, indeed, pensions, it can be noted that in September the variation percentage is still negative by 0,1 points.

Within the next three weeks, the Government will have to indicate the provisional equalization rate for next year which is obtained from the first 9 months of the Foi index. If the executive were to decide to take the Istat data for September, it could even happen that next year pensioners will receive a few euros less in pensions. However, such a decision will hardly be taken given that the 1992 law relating to equalization is linked exclusively to increases and not to decreases in percentage terms.

However, as Luca Cifoni writes in the Messaggero, it could happen that pensioners will see a few euros less for the month of January next year. Why? The reason is behind the data on final reassessment for 2015. At the beginning of this year, a total +0,3% was calculated for the lowest pensions, but prices grew with an even lower variation, stopping at 0,2%. Hence, therefore, the possibility that pensions for the first month are a little lower as in the case of pensioners with a gross check of 1000 euros per month who should lose 13 euros in January.

The case is different for those who collect a pension allowance exceeding three times the minimum (about 1500 euros). For them, on the other hand, there will be a few euros more than what has been collected now due to the decision of the Consulta which canceled the block on revaluations implemented by the Monti government. Therefore, even in 2016 retirees, with allowances exceeding three times the minimum, will have a few euros more, receiving part of the revaluation of 2012 and 2013.
