Pensions: the myths to dispel about the "thousand euros a month"

According to the fourth report on the "Budget of the Italian pension system" produced by Itinerari Previdenziali, it is not true that Italian pensions are on average less than a thousand euros a month, nor that half of checks are less than 500 euros a month.

Pensions: the myths to dispel about the "thousand euros a month"

It is not true that the average pensions of Italians are less than or close to a thousand euros a month. The annual bill is not, as is believed, 12.136 euros, but 17.323. So more than 1.400 euros per month. The reason? Simple: there are 16.179.377 pensioners in Italy (ie more than one person out of four) while the pensions in payment are 23.095.567. Consequentially, each pensioner receives an average of 1,427 pensions. The calculations, made on 2015 data, are contained in the fourth report on the "Budget of the Italian social security system" by the study center of Itinerari Previdenziali and presented on Wednesday to the Chamber of Deputies.

By the same logic, it is also wrong to say that half of pensions are less than 500 euros a month: "The reality is different - explains Alberto Brambilla, president of the study and research center of Itinerari Previdenziali - referring to the physical subjects who receive more services, and not to the individual services, there are just over 2,2 million pensioners who receive about 500 euros a month out of a total of 16,2 million pensioners and are mainly subjects who have not paid social contributions”.

Plus I'm paying over 8 million welfare benefits (invalidity, accompaniment, social and war pensions) or who benefit from minimum integrations or social increases. This means that 51,34% of retirees receive partially or totally "assisted" benefits, for almost all of which contributions have not been paid (or in any case contributions of modest amounts and for a few years have been paid).

But which category of workers has the highest average pensions? The ranking by average amount of pensions continues, as in 2014, to be led by note (who pay about 35% of their income and therefore pay their pensions in full), while the Journalists, surpassed by university teachers who win the silver medal. Company executives registered in the ranking follow Flight fund (mainly Alitalia), i Accountants and – further apart – the lawyers, the workers of the telephone sector and accountants. Pensions on average lower, however, for agricultural, pharmacists e veterinary.
