Pd, Zingaretti resigns: "We only talk about armchairs, I'm ashamed"

The secretary of the Democratic Party, elected two years ago in the primaries, is leaving his office: "Since I'm the target, I'm taking a step back for the love of Italy and the party." In reality, his secretariat, obsessed with rivalry with Matteo Renzi, has failed in all strategic choices and the party has lost his identity. Now it's a question of understanding whether Zingaretti's are really irrevocable resignations or not

Pd, Zingaretti resigns: "We only talk about armchairs, I'm ashamed"

A few more hours and Nicola Zingaretti, barring other twists, will no longer be the secretary of the Democratic Party. Invested in the role two years ago, in March 2019, the dem leader today announced his resignation through a message on Facebook: "I am ashamed that in the Pd, a party of which I am secretary, for 20 days we have only been talking about seats and primaries, when the third wave of Covid is exploding in Italy, there is the problem of work, investments and the need to rebuild hope especially for the new generations".

“Since I am the target – continued Zingaretti always on his Facebook wall -, out of love for Italy and for the party, I just have to do the umpteenth act to unblock the situation. Now everyone will have to assume their responsibilities. In the next few hours I will write to the President of the party to formally resign. The National Assembly will make the most appropriate and useful choices”.

“I was elected just two years ago – the president of the Lazio Region also recalled -. We saved the Democratic Party and now I have done everything to push the management team towards a new phase. I asked for frankness, collaboration and solidarity to immediately hold a political congress on Italy, our ideas, our vision. We should discuss how to support the Draghi government, a positive challenge that good politics must take up. It wasn't enough. On the contrary, I was struck by the relaunch of attacks even by those who have shared all the fundamental choices we have made in these two years. We no longer listen to each other and we make caricatures of the positions”.

Zingaretti then took his leave, however, claiming the work done: “I have done my partI hope that now the Pd will go back to talking about the country's problems and commit to solving them. A huge hug and thanks to all, militants, members and voters".

The announcement of Nicola Zingaretti's resignation comes suddenly, but not unexpectedly: after the alliance with the 5 Stars on the occasion of the government formed in the summer of 2019 (desired more by Matteo Renzi than by him, to tell the truth) and the good result at the Regionals last autumn, the dem leader then paid off the excessive imbalance on the positions of the 5 Star Movement and above all the defense to the bitter end of President Giuseppe Conte, who instead had to resign. The attempt to see Conte as a possible federator of the center-left has also failed, given that the former prime minister is running today to lead the 5 Stars, which according to polls is reducing the political weight of the Democratic Party. In short, on strategic choices Zingaretti, obsessed with rivalry with his predecessor Matteo Renzi, has not got one right and is now paying the consequences.

In the next few hours, however, it will be necessary to understand if Zingaretti's resignations are really irrevocable or if they were made to have them rejected at the next National Assembly of the Democratic Party on 13 and 14 March.
