Pd in chaos: Minniti gives up, Renzi leaves

The former interior minister breaks with Renzi and gives up running for the secretariat of the Democratic Party - Renziani in the storm, while Matteo Renzi meditates on leaving the Democratic Party and founding a new anti-sovereign and reformist political formation with which to present himself in the European elections

Pd in chaos: Minniti gives up, Renzi leaves

Marco Minniti definitely has renounced to run for the secretariat of the Democratic Party in the primaries. The decision of the former interior minister was finalized yesterday after the break with the Renzian wing, but especially with the former prime minister Matteo Renziaccused of lack of support. Now the Renzians could shift their support to the list Martina-Richetti.

But the real loose cannon inside the Democratic Party is the future of Matteo Renzi, who shows that he is less and less interested in the fate of the party and who yesterday was busy throughout the day in a series of meetings in Brussels with European leaders, above all socialists, liberals and dem.

It is not excluded, even if the die has not yet been cast, that Renzi crosses the Rubicon e leave the Democratic Party to create a new political formation center-left inspired by Europeanism, reformism and above all anti-sovereignism and which can participate in the next European elections with a list ranging from Macron to Tsipras.

But it is precisely the hypothesis that Renzi leaves the Democratic Party and founds a new European-style party that shakes the waters of the Democratic Party itself and above all the Renzians who feel orphaned by the leader precisely in a crucial phase of Italian political life.

Renzi's idea is to start from scratch, wipe out the ruling class of the Democratic Party and of the Renzi wing itself - also because he has broken with almost everyone - and found a party based on civic clubs and an entirely new ruling class, taken from civil society, from the new generations and from professional skills. But to better understand the future of the Democratic Party and Renzi, the next few hours will be decisive.
