The congress should arrive before the European elections, but first a new assembly will be needed in the autumn to prepare the path and define the primaries. This could be the solution that will come out of the Pd meeting scheduled for this morning, Saturday 7 July. At 10,30 the works will begin which, barring unexpected twists, will sanction the appointment of Maurizio Martina at the head of the Democratic Party after the resignation of Matteo Renzi.
A temporary guide, therefore, waiting to define more stable balances within the Democratic Party, more than ever divided internally. It is precisely on the date of the congress (perhaps in February?) that the tug of war between the various dem souls continued into the night and it will be seen whether the compromise reached with the regent Martina (on Friday he had even threatened to withdraw his candidacy) will stand the test of the meeting being held at the Hotel Ergife in Rome.
In the background there is also the internal controversy over the discontinuity of the profile of the Democratic Party with respect to that of Matteo Renzi, requested by the internal left and opposed by the Renzi wing. While the suggestion of an imminent split between Renzi and the Renzians was clearly denied by Luca Lotti and the spokesman Marco Agnoletto ("false and invented news"). Renzi, Lotti specified, will be present at the party assembly and will give his opinion when taking the floor. Given that Matteo Renzi's resignation as secretary is irreversible, the National Assembly has – according to the Statute of the Democratic Party – two possibilities: to convene a congress immediately or to elect a secretary with an absolute majority of those entitled, ie 501 votes. The first scenario is disliked by all currents, who agree on the need not to rush now into a race for names, but to have a "constituent" phase of redefining the political profile of the Democratic Party. Martina on Thursday proposed holding a forum in October in which to deal with political, social and civic realities external to the party.
