Pd, Lega, M5S: race towards elections in June

First agreement between the Democratic Party and the 5 Star Movement with the support of the League to bring the new electoral law to the Montecitorio hall at the end of February: the intention is to extend the Italicum to the Senate, revised and corrected by the Constitutional Court and to reach the popular vote by June

Pd, Lega, M5S: race towards elections in June

The race to vote has begun. A preventive agreement between Matteo Renzi's Democratic Party and the Five Star Movement, supported by the League, has allowed the conference of group leaders of the Chamber to speed up the process of the new electoral law by scheduling its examination in the Montecitorio hall for February 27 .

The goal is to get Italians to vote on 11 June or, at the latest, by the end of June, respecting the indications of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, who is asking for a new electoral law before dissolving the Chambers, and to honor Italy's international spring commitments.

The general agreement is the simplest one and that is, it provides for the extension of the Italicum to the Senate as well, revised and corrected by the Constitutional Court: no ballot but confirmation of the majority bonus to those who reach 40% of the votes, blocked list leaders, 3% cutoff and double gender preference.

It is possible that Silvio Berlusconi will also join the agreement on the new electoral law, personally sponsored by the secretary of the Democratic Party Matteo Renzi, despite the usual peevish dissent from the group leader of Forza Italia deputies, Renato Brunetta. On the other hand, the position of the Pd minority is problematic, by now divided between the D'Alema wing, which is moving towards the split and the agreement with Nicki Vendola, and Bersani who would prefer to remain in the Pd but sees the composition of the electoral lists as a danger Renzi's work.

On the other hand, the comment of the secretary of the Democratic Party was enthusiastic: “Now I really want to see who in Parliament tries to invent an excuse not to go to the elections. For me, voting in 2017 or 2018 is the same but the only thing is to avoid annuities being triggered, because it would be very unfair to the citizens".
