THEItaly that invents continues to grow in Europe. In 2021 there was a increase of 2% of the patent applications published byEPO (European Patent Office), 90 more than in 2020. The total of Italian patent applications published by the EPO in 2021 are 4.555. To the latter, however, must be added the applications submitted but not yet published, which raise last year's growth figure to +6,5%, compared to an average of +2,3% recorded by the European Union in 27.

According to the analysis carried out by Unioncamere–Dintec, it's pharmaceutical technologies, biotechnology and chemistry, which register a increase by 9,5% over the previous year. In particular the chemical-pharmaceutical technologies add up to 955 patents and concentrate 21% of Italian innovative capacity in Europe.

Following in terms of dynamics, the electrical and electronic technologies, which, with 499 inventions published, grew by 4,8% compared to the previous year.

In general, the major contribution to Italian patents is that of mechanical and transport technologies: with 1.790 patent applications published (-0,8% compared to 2020).

Good growth in the regions of the Center (+13,4) of the applications published while the regions of the South produce only 5,6% of the total applications.

Quasi 2 out of 3 European patents of the 4.555 patents as of 2021 relate to top 15 provinces of the country, with a total of 2.989 questions. Milan, Turin, Bologna, Rome and Treviso these are the provinces that have presented the highest number of patents, with 1.729 applications, 38% of those published for the 105 provinces considered.
