Passera, Italy between recession and credit crunch: "There is a need for simplifications"

"The Italian company has a credit crunch problem: we must act immediately". Although alarmed by the country's data which continues to be "in the throes of a second recession", the Minister of Economic Development Corrado Passera, audited by the Budget Commission of the Chamber, clarified the points on which the Government will aim to make Italy grow again

SIMPLIFICATIONS – The problem of the credit restriction is the one that most afflicts the Minister. “The issue of credit”, Passera declared, “has become a 'super issue' due to a series of serious causes: lack of liquidity, an increase in non-performing loans, banking rules which have taken away more capital from the banks. Thus a real credit crunch was created”. The idea, proposed by Passera “is present every 2-3 months a 'package' that affects the life of families but, above all, of businesses and in particular of small and medium-sized ones”. “We know how much need there is for simplifications”.

INFRASTRUCTURE – As regards the boost that the Government intends to give to investments in infrastructure, "the idea", declared the Minister, "is to see in the next 12 months 40-50 billion euros of work addressed and started as much as possible”.

PAYABLES PAYABLES – Also the Government he hopes to be able to repay at least half of the debts that the PA owes to businesses, which amount to around 12-50 billion euros, in the next 60 months. It would mean "a lot", according to Minister Passera, if in the next 12 months "we succeed, through the adoption of the directive and through an initial absorption of the payments not made by the public administration, to restart half of the past due". It would be especially important "in terms of impact on finance and public accounts", specified the former number one of Intesa.

BEAUTY CONTEST – Passera also opposed the idea of giving away television frequencies for free. "I asked for time to talk to all the parties involved", declared the Minister "we gave ourselves a month to formulate a proposal", which it should arrive by April 19-20. On the beauty contest, he continued, "I have expressed my opinion several times, that it is not a good thing to give away state assets for free”.

SNAM-ENI DISTRIBUTION – No to the sale of Snam to foreigners. Passera assured him, confirming the Government's intention to conclude the separation "within the legislature". But, added the Minister, "it must be a market-friendly operation and done in the best possible way". The fact that Snam can be sold to foreigners "is a risk", but “with the mechanism we have in mind” is a risk “quite manageable, that is avoidable"he concluded.

FINMECCANICA – onhypothetical sale of Ansaldo Energia and Ansaldo Breda by the defense giant Finmeccanica, Minister Passera replied that before looking for other solutions or letting yourself be tempted by sales, "we must try to fix the companies" in difficulty.
