Parmigiano Reggiano: the Consortium ready to fight the collapse in prices

The State has created the context with the Relaunch Decree, but the producers are implementing their own commercial strategy. It will be more effective than any political declaration to support Made in Italy. Parmigiano Reggiano, a product of Italian food excellence and sustainable economy, aims to reconquer the market by proposing the quality of a production that has been unique in the world for over a thousand years on an international scale. Its protection consortium will discuss the best solutions to regain that 24% of the price lost due to the coronavirus on June 40th. Basically between Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena, Bologna, companies have suffered a collapse in prices that has damaged a traditional virtuous circuit. The prospects for economic rebalancing are therefore postponed to the end of the year.

Hoping that everything goes in the right direction, beyond the propositions of the government which could objectively do something more incisive on exports.

The economic restart is difficult for all sectors, but there can be no hesitation in those that drive up the balance of payments, bringing extraordinary eco-sustainable capabilities to the world.

In 2019, business had gone well, despite the battles to defend brands and processing cycles. The average price of the "Reggiano" was 10,75 euros per kg - they explain to the Parmigiano Reggiano Consortium - and then dropped abruptly below 10 euros in October and now stands at around 7,20 euros per kg. An economic reverse that was greatly affected by Trump's crazy policy on import duties. The only sign of recovery came in May from large-scale distribution. " We are taking effective measures which, driven by an adequate marketing plan, will allow us to close this anomalous year by consolidating the turnover of 2019 " comments Nicola Bertinelli, president of the Parmigiano Reggiano Consortium.

In the meeting of 24 June, the Consortium will discuss the purchase of 335 wheels of Parmesan from its 320 dairies, so as to rebalance the market. The wheels will be stored in the warehouses, aged for longer and progressively brought back to the market, when it will be possible to obtain a more adequate remuneration. Not an unprecedented technique, in truth, but accompanied this time by an invitation to members to limit the production quotas already established for the three-year period to come. As always, the quality of the supply chain will be guaranteed right from the collection of the milk on areas that are not contaminated and influenced by particular environmental factors. A Doc area that the Consortium identifies only in four provinces of Emilia Romagna to the left of the Reno river and Mantua (outside the Region) and to the right of the Po river. The defense of the best-known Italian table product is played out here.
