The Court of Cassation partially confirmed the sentence against Cesare Geronzi and Matteo Arpe, defendants in the context of the trial on the sale to Parmalat of Ciappazzi mineral waters, one of the branches resulting from the collapse of the agro-food group.
As far as Geronzi is concerned, only for one charge, namely usury, was the limitation period admitted; both for Geronzi and for Arpe the appeal was not accepted for some charges, for other charges referral to the Court of Appeal for a new examination and re-determination, downwards, of the sentences.
Geronzi, former chairman of Generali, was accused as former chairman of the then Banca di Roma and was sentenced on appeal to five years. Arpe was accused as a former manager of the Capitalia group, in relation, among other things, to a 50 million euro loan granted to Parmalat spa (while the manager was acquitted in the first instance of the allegations relating to the Ciappazzi episode) . On appeal, Arpe was sentenced to 3 years and seven months.
