Parisi and the mystery of Twitter followers

The newspaper "la Repubblica" casts doubt on the sudden surge in followers registered by the centre-right mayoral candidate in Milan Stefano Parisi on Twitter. Real or fake contacts purchased through one of the many services on the net?

Parisi and the mystery of Twitter followers

A little mystery surrounds the Twitter profile of the center-right candidate for mayor of Milan Stefano Parisi. To ask a few questions about the sudden success of the center-right exponent on the famous social network is “la Repubblica”.

The Roman newspaper points out that, in just a few days, Parisi has almost doubled the number of his followers, going from 2.900 on April 3 to 5.200 on April 10.

A rather anomalous surge, for those familiar with how social networks work, which prompted "la Repubblica" to wonder if by chance there aren't "fakes, bots and sites that sell packages of followers to increase numbers" behind them.

Many will think that this sudden popularity could be due to Parisi's run for mayor of Milan thanks to which his fame is increasing day by day. In part it will certainly be true, but scrolling through the list of people interested in the tweets of Giuseppe Sala's rival, we notice how many users have "improbable names - writes Mario Calabresi's newspaper - made up of letters and numbers or foreigners, with no connection with Milan and no interest in politics”.

Usually these "strange followers" can be acquired through ad hoc services that allow you to tangibly increase the number of contacts. For what purpose? In an increasingly 2.0 society, a high number of contacts is equivalent to a presumed greater authority. It's a pity that these services give only and exclusively names, behind which the user often doesn't even exist.
