On the tenth day of Paris 2024 Olympics, Team Italy reached a total of nine gold medals, an achievement not seen at this point in the Games since Sydney 2000, then there were 11 golds won up to the tenth day. Currently, Italy has conquered 25 medals overall: 9 gold, 10 silver and 6 bronze. The last two golden successes were achieved in the mixed team skeet won by Diana Bacosi and Gabriele Rossetti, and the historic gold by Alice D'Amato in artistic gymnastics, accompanied by Manila Esposito's bronze.

With six days of matches before the end, the Azzurri find themselves ateighth place in the medal table, 15 medals away from the Tokyo 2020 record (40 medals: 10 gold, 10 silver and 20 bronze). We are also the third European country in the medal table, behind France and the United Kingdom.

“The calculations are done in the end”, reiterates the CONI president, Giovanni Malago which has the declared objective of surpassing the Tokyo record. While waiting to be able to win some more gold, the silvers are already at the level of the Japanese edition, while the bronzes are late, with several fourth places, the so-called "cardboard medals".

Le next blue medal hopes reside in Gianmarco Tamberi in athletics (hoping it's 100% after the renal colic), in the Italvolley team men's team after the phenomenal comeback against Japan (from 0-2 with three match points against to 3-2) and in the women's team, in the Tita-Banti duo in sailing, in the modern pentathlon and in the team pursuit in track cycling. Other medal hopes can come from Simone Alessio and Vito Dell'Aquila in taekwondo, Marco Simonelli in the 110 hurdles, the 4x100 relay, Frank Chamizo in wrestling, the rhythmic gymnastics butterflies and the men's 4x100 led by Tortu and Jacobs , also hoping for some other pleasant surprises.

Italy first... for fourth places

Italy is doing well and, with a bit of luck and a few centimeters more, would have obtained a few more medals. The blues are in fact at the first place in a particular classification: that of fourth and fifth places, results that are often difficult to digest but nevertheless indicative of the high level of Italian athletes. So far, Italy has collected 15 fourth and 15 fifth places, which put it in first position for the so-called “wooden medals”.

Simona Quadarella, eg, he missed the podium twice, in the 1500 and 800 freestyle. The fourth places include the performances of Massimo Stano in the 20km march, beaten by just one second, and Nadia Battocletti, who would have obtained bronze if the disqualification of an Ethiopian athlete had been confirmed. The first "wooden medal" came in the synchronized three-meter springboard diving with Elena Bertocchi and Chiara Pellacani, followed by Alice Volpi in the individual foil, Luca Braidot in the mountain bike, Blessed Pilate in the 100 breaststroke, and other athletes in different disciplines such as Odette Giuffrida and Manuel Lombardo in judo.

In this ranking of fourth places, Great Britain follows with 13 placings, France with 12, and Canada with 11. At the end of the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Italy had obtained 11 fourth places; to those of Rio 2016, 10; in London 2012, 8; in Beijing 2008, 14; in Athens 2004, 4; in Sydney 2000, 8; in Atlanta 1996, 8; and in Barcelona 1992, 7.
