Imu 2020 payment: deadline December 16, here's what to do

Today, December 16, the deadline for payment of the second installment of the Imu 2020 expires. Despite the difficulties associated with the pandemic, in the end the government decided not to postpone one of the tax deadlines most hated by taxpayers. And the reason is not difficult to understand: according to a simulation by the Uil, the balance of the Imu 2020 is worth 9,9 billion euros for the state coffers.

IMU PAYMENT 2020: OLD AND NEW EXEMPTIONS

As in past years, the Imu is not paid on the main residence, unless this is a luxury property (cadastral categories A/1, A/8 and A/9).

The novelty linked to the pandemic is instead the exemption for apartments intended for tourist activities (B&Bs, holiday homes, farmhouses, campsites and more), provided they are managed as a business, i.e. with a VAT number and with registration in the registers regulated locally. If, on the contrary, the activity is carried out on an occasional basis, the Imu must be paid.

The managers of the activities identified by the Ateco codes listed in the annexes to the Ristori 2020 and ter decrees (sports, artistic, entertainment, personal care, bars, restaurants, others, shops and department stores) are also exempt from the Imu 2 balance. The State will pay for them with payments to the Municipalities for around 121 million euros.

IMU PAYMENT 2020: THE RATES

Before paying the second installment, it is advisable to consult the resolution of your Municipality (you can find it on the Department of Finance website) to check if the rates have risen compared to the June advance. In this case, the balance on the first installment must also be paid.

The (few) Municipalities that have not yet published the resolution have until January 31st to do so. Citizens are required to pay on the basis of the rates in force in June and any difference must be paid by February 28, obviously without penalties or interest. In the event of an adjustment in favor (a more unique than rare case), a refund will have to be requested.
