Padoan: "Humanitarian measure for savers of the 4 rescued banks"

“We are studying some humanitarian measures that meet the needs of weaker sections of savers involved in bank resolution, which has nothing to do with this operation as such." This is the clarification that arrived yesterday from the Minister of the Economy, Pier Carlo Padoan.

The intervention under discussion in the Chamber aims to help part of the citizens who have lost the savings invested in the subordinated bonds of the four recently bailed out public banks (Carife, CariChieti, Banca Etruria and Banca Marche).

According to Treasury number one, the European Union “he might have some objections if this measure was considered part of the resolution operation, but it is not: they are two completely separate things”.

Therefore, it would not be a question of state aid, nor of "a reimbursement of the costs incurred - concluded Padoan -, but of an operation that has a humanitarian nature and which recognizes the fact that a part of the population is in a situation of need because suddenly, for reasons to be explored, he finds himself having made the wrong choices. It is comparable to an operation to support poverty”.
