Padoan: "The EU must change the direction of economic policy"

“I think it's time to say that we need to change the direction of the economic policy agenda in Europe. A real and not a fake reasoning on the problems of growth is mature”. Thus expressed Gian Carlo Padoan, Minister of Economy, speaking at a conference organized by the Luiss University of Rome for the centenary of the birth of Guido Carli.

"If we continue to say in Europe that the main path to growth is structural reforms - added the number one of the Treasury -, then we need to state clearly under which conditions the measures work and under which they don't".

The minister recalled that the European Union "in 2014 had positive growth in all or almost all of its member countries after experiencing a very deep recession in the last two years, a serious element when we take into account the costs of the recession which mean damage permanent".

The fiscal adjustment after the crisis “has produced extremely important results to defend – continued Padoan -. We cannot afford to throw away the enormous efforts we have made. The government is working on concrete measures that will shortly be in the parliamentary debate".
