Padoan: "Greek debt, we need a sustainable solution"

Padoan: "Greek debt, we need a sustainable solution"

On Greece's debt "it is not a question of making gestures", but of "finding a solution compatible with the existing balances that is sustainable". This was stated by the Minister of Economy, Pier Carlo Padoan, arriving in Brussels for the Eurogroup.

There are “two messages coming from the elections in Greece – he added -. The first is that more growth and jobs need to be created in Europe. The second is that the solution to these problems must be a European solution. We must all work together to create a balance between financial compatibility with growth and work”.

The European Commissioner for Economic Affairs, Pierre Moscovici, is on the same line: “The European Union and Athens have common objectives – said the former French minister -. A Greece that manages to straighten itself and stand on its feet, that creates growth and jobs and that is able to repay its debts, the fundamental question. Now the discussion will be about how to get there. I hope that the Eurogroup will give a clear signal authorizing the resumption of dialogue with Greece, on the basis of compliance with the commitments made”.

As for Italy, Padoan said that the government “is thinking about the hypotheses that the communication on the new flexibility offers Italy: we will make the most of it. As I have said many times, employment follows growth, so employment will arrive in Italy”.

“There are internal rules of the Eurozone that must be respected,” said the director general of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, in an interview with the French newspaper Le Monde, underlining that “special categories cannot be created for this or that Village".
