Pablo Picasso and antiquity, rare works inspired by the civilizations of the Mediterranean

As part of the series of art exhibitions “Divine Dialogues”, the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens (Greece) is organizing this year, from 20 June to 20 October, a major exhibition entitled “Picasso and Antiquity. Line and clay”.

Pablo Picasso and antiquity, rare works inspired by the civilizations of the Mediterranean

It is a rare exhibit on ceramics by Picasso and drawings inspired by antiquity and in dialogue with the works of art of ancient Greece, curated by archeology professor NC Stampolidis and Olivier Berggruen

The greatest of the modern artists of the XNUMXth century is famous for his spectacular paintings, but less so for his drawings, engravings and ceramics. The combination of these media closely recalls antiquity and has produced works inspired by the Cretan-Mycenaean and Greek worlds and by Mediterranean civilizations in general.

In the exhibition “Picasso and antiquity. Line and clay “rare works by Picasso, depicting sea creatures, animals, human figures, mythological scenes and scenes inspired by ancient tragedy and comedy, converse with ancient artifacts in another “Divine Dialogue” at the Cycladic Art Museum.

A whole world is revealed in the Museum of Cycladic Art, a world carried by the artist within him, a world of antiquities discovered not necessarily in the ancient lands of the Mediterranean but in European museums, in books and in conversations with Christian Zervos and Jean Cocteau .

The exhibition is organized with the support of FABA – Almine and Bernard Ruiz-Picasso Foundation for Art, Musée Picasso Antibes, Museo Picasso Malaga and Musée National Picasso – Paris as part of the “Picasso-Mediterranée” project.
