For the first time after 31 years of uninterrupted growth, spending on civil servant salaries in 2011 was down (-1,6%) compared to the previous year, amounting to 170 billion euros. This was stated by the Aran in a press conference held by the president Sergio Gasparrini, who also communicated the first advances on the estimates for 2012, which speak of a further drop in spending of 2,3% to 165,36 billion. The expense is expected down for 2013 as well.
The drop in public administration spending on wages was made possible by the containment measures introduced in recent years: above all, the freeze on contracts and restrictions on turnover which establish that it can be hired within the limit of 20% of outgoing personnel and the expense for this staff.
Between 2006 and 2011, the number of civil servants decreased by over 230, from 3 to 627, or 3% of the total. A drop of another percentage point is expected for 396, while the salaries of civil servants decreased in 6 by 2012% compared to 2011.
