October is Financial Education Month

Educating yourself in finance and savings management has become essential for families. Everyone needs financial education and it is a fact that emerges both from national rankings and statistics, and from the curiosity that users reserve for some financial initiatives.

It is for this reason that the Committee for the planning and coordination of financial education activities, established in 2017 by decree of the Minister of Economy and Finance, in concert with the Minister of Education, University and Research and with that of economic development, in implementation of law n. 15/2017, on the "Urgent provisions for the protection of savings in the credit sector", promoted the month of financial education which will take place throughout the national territory and will be divided into over 200 events.

And it is precisely the establishment by law of a national financial education strategy that has made the month of October – which in the United States will be April, while in Canada and England November – a unique opportunity to identify long-term actions and programs of which Italy has been lacking up to now.

The foundations, associations and civil society entities together with the institutions involved for a common purpose have enthusiastically welcomed the initiative of the Committee and so has the Global Thinking Foundation, which as part of its activities participates in the EduFin month with a series Of initiatives with special attention to women.

For example, only 45% of men and 30% of women in Italy demonstrate an adequate level of financial education, placing the country in last place for financial literacy among G7 members. Disparity between countries which translates into gender disparity, whereby it is clear that men and women approach the financial sector is so different that it generates an important gender gap in itself.

The month of financial education includes information and awareness-raising activities and events on correct behavior in the management and planning of personal and family resources with the aim of guaranteeing economic well-being through the appropriate use of financial, insurance and social security instruments. The month will open with the “World Investor Week” and will end on 31 October with World Savings Day. It will also be possible to follow the events online.
