Oslo prey to terrorism: a bomb and a shooting sow fear

A strong explosion terrifies the center of the Norwegian capital Oslo. It would have been caused by a bomb - police sources quoted by TV2 television speak of a car bomb - the detonation of which destroyed several buildings and shattered the windows of the building where one of the country's main newspapers, the Verdens Gang, is based (Vg). Among the buildings affected also the one that houses the office of the prime minister, Jens Stoltenberg. However, the government reassures that the prime minister was not there at the time of the explosion.

An hour after the explosion - which took place at 15.26 -, there was official confirmation of the presence of "dead and wounded": seven people - according to the police - would have lost their lives, while two others would have been seriously injured. Also according to the public security forces, a surveillance camera would have taken images of a large car passing in the government district moments before the explosion. The wreckage would have been found outside the affected area.

Shortly thereafter, a man dressed as a policeman opened fire and terrorized a Labor summer camp on the island of Utoya, west of Oslo. The area was hosting a meeting of the party's youth, which was also to be attended by the prime minister. According to a witness, "twenty-twenty-five" bodies remained on the beach. The bomber, arrested by the police, has a distinctly Scandinavian appearance, reports state television Nrk. A claim for the bomb blast came from a hitherto unknown Islamic organization, the "Supporters of global jihad".
