Now the challenge between the premier and the League

After the referendum, Berlusconi and the PDL minimized and said they were ready to accept the will of the people, but the Carroccio replies: we are tired of being slapped, we will dictate our conditions in Pontida. Meanwhile, the verification is incumbent on the government. Bersani asks for the premier's resignation, Di Pietro does not. The third prong will not join a “shaky majority”.

Is it possible to minimize the message sent to the Government and to the majority by the 57% of voters (55% if we include Italians abroad) who went to the polls for the four referendums? Berlusconi and the PDL try, but the League is not there. And so from Palazzo Chigi and Palazzo Grazioli it is known that "the result is clear and should not be ignored, because it expresses the will of the majority of citizens who must always be accepted", and on the other hand the League presses by declaring itself "sick of getting slapped" and making an appointment with the premier next Sunday when from the Pontida meadow, when Bossi will dictate the new agenda to the Government.

An agenda which, according to what has been said in recent days by its most authoritative leaders, could include, in addition to the request for tax reduction, also that of withdrawing from military missions (Libya first of all) to find the funds necessary for the reform of the IRS. "We will not wait for the third defeat," Minister Roberto Calderoli said yesterday. In short, to use a boxing metaphor, if Berlusconi gives the impression of having closed himself in a corner to absorb the blows, the League wants to go on the attack to immediately seek the decisive blow. But precisely this aggressiveness could hide the fragility of the Carroccio, which also fears contestation from the base. And among the political observers there are those who also see the appearance of a Bossi problem in the internal party debate in via Bellerio.

This is the political picture of the majority after the defeat of the referendums. A majority that immediately finds itself having to face demanding parliamentary deadlines. Which will culminate in the verification of June 22 in Montecitorio, for which the League expects a vote of confidence. But it should not be forgotten that already at the end of this week the Montecitorio room should vote for confidence in the development decree, an appointment which from being a technician risks becoming political. And some signs of intolerance are already beginning to manifest themselves within the group of managers.

As for the opposition, Bersani has asked for the resignation of the Government, but a Di Pietro, who is unprecedentedly moderate, thinks differently and, to point out that he proposed the referendums and not the Pd, he says that the result should not be exploited politically, given who also voted for centre-right voters. In turn, Casini and the third pole speak of "a no as big as a house" addressed by the voters to the Government and immediately make it clear to the sirens of the PDL who offer them new alliances: "We do not join a tottering majority".
