Optical fiber in white areas: Open Fiber launches the transparency operation

Password: transparency. Open Fiber launch an online section with i updated data, month by month, on progress of construction sites in the white areas. The goal is to provide answers to the innumerable perplexities surrounding the entire fiber optic coverage chain of the white, gray and black areas of the country.

In an interview with Corriere della Sera the managing director Mario Rossetti spoke of delays accumulated regarding the conclusion of the roofing works (scheduled for the end of 2022), linked to the Italian bureaucracy and the lack of skilled labor on construction sites. An alarm also raised by trade associations. Despite the structural delay, however, the CEO highlighted that 2022 was a year of strong acceleration, with 20 km of network built and will end the year with a total of around 57 km of network. "A challenging goal", but Rossetti says he is "confident in Open Fiber's ability to achieve it".

But to bring the optical fiber to the white areas of the country, Rossetti specified that the infrastructure must reach 88 thousand kilometers network and, this requires the release of over 100 thousand authorizations (by the various entities involved in the project for various reasons) in 6.232 Municipalities, to reach a total of approximately 6,4 million real estate units (apartments, offices, companies, offices of the Public Administration).

Where are we at? The numbers as at 31 October 2022

As at 31 October 2022, over 53 kilometers of network had been completed, equal to 60% of the total envisaged in the plan. From the beginning of 2022 to 31 October, around 15.500 kilometers of infrastructure were built, which is expected to rise to around 20 by the end of the year. In one year, the km built will therefore be more than 50% of the approximately 37 km built from the start of activities (2017) to the end of 2021.

As regards the Municipality there are 3.770 those in which the works have been completed - i.e. with Cuir certificates (network plant completion), or about 60% of the total of the 6.232 Municipalities envisaged by the concession infratel. Approximately 3,47 million correspond to these Municipalities real estate units, that means 43% more since the beginning of the year. Since the end of 2021, 1.160 new Municipalities have been completed for around 1,05 million new real estate units.

And there are 2,64 million real estate units in marketability, +44% compared to the end of 2021. These are real estate units that are entered in the saleability databases reserved for OF's partner operators and which can thus activate the services at the request of end users.
