Do you remember the much reviled and sometimes improbable television broadcasts in which a talkative presenter tried to place works of art? Well, it seems that someone - after tens of years - has returned to take seriously the sales system in question and has decided to relaunch it. That someone is Amazon, the online shopping giant that has recently been extending its tentacles in every sector, from information – a few days ago it bought the historic Washington Post – to art, in fact.
The great web souk has in fact launched a new platform dedicated to the sale of artistic creations. The address is www.amazon.com/art. Those interested can access more than 40.000 “items” – if we can call them that – offered for sale by 150 galleries and dealers in the United States, Canada, Great Britain and the Netherlands.
Amazon Art is aimed at all budgets. “The platform allows all customers to become collectors,” says Jeff Bezos' group. In the catalog there are plates for less than 50 dollars, but also Marilyn Monroe portrayed by Andy Warhol for more than 125000 dollars. Not to mention the 1,45 million Monet.
The site allows users to filter results by price, artist name, as well as size, style and genre. Beyond the commercial aspect, Amazon says it wants to convey knowledge: "thanks to the detailed captions, customers can have information on the artists' works and training," explains the company.
The painting, whether you want to furnish a bare living room or keep a masterpiece in the bunker, ends up on the net. And the auctioneer, as usual, is Amazon.
