Unexpected change at the top of OpenAI, the non-profit company that created Chat GPT. The company's Board of Directors has decided to torpedo its co-founder and CEO Sam altman because of lack of confidence following some of his behaviors which hindered company activities.
“Mr. Altman's departure follows a process of thorough review of the board – explains the OpenAi note – which concluded that he was not consistently frank in his communications with the board, hindering his ability to carry out his responsibilities. The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue to lead OpenAI.”
The chief technology officer was appointed interim in Altman's place Mira Murat who as his first act as interim CEO, reassured employees of the company's relationship with Microsoft, which has invested billions of dollars in OpenAI.
Altman responds on X: “I will have more to say in the future”
Altman relied on X to comment on his farewell to the company: “I loved my time at OpenAI. Most of all I enjoyed working with talented people. I'll have more to say about this later".
Altman, 38, thanks to the initial support of Elon Musk, helped found OpenAi in 2015. Over the years he had managed to transform the company into a leader in the artificial intelligence sector, obtaining a 10 billion investment from Microsoft .
In the last year Altman had also become a spokesperson for the risks of the technological revolution of artificial intelligence without real and correct regulation: “It is essential that artificial intelligence is developed with democratic values. My oldest fear is that the field of AI could really harm the world” he said in May during a hearing in the United States Senate.
Brockman, president and co-founder, is also gone
The council also announced that Greg Brockman, current president of OpenAI, yes will resign from his position of prime minister.
“I'm super proud of what we built together starting in my apartment eight years ago. We have been through difficult times and amazing times together. But considering today's news, I'm leaving. I continue to believe in the mission to create safe, generative AI that benefits humanity,” wrote Brockman on X.
In a later post Brockman explained how he and Altman are were left in shock for the choice of the Council. A sudden solution that no one knew about: “We too are still trying to understand exactly what happened.”
Altman as Steve Jobs
We wonder about it what could have happened that was so serious? to terminate the relationship immediately. Is Altman paying for poor management or exorbitant cost increases? Or is it his statements on the risks of artificial intelligence that the Board of Directors didn't like? Is there something personal? And what will happen to OpenAi now?
Questions that will surely have answers in some time when we really understand what happened between the board and Altman. At the moment there is only speculation.
Altman's farewell reminiscent of Steve Jobs, who was dismissed from Apple only to return years later, reviving the company from the brink of bankruptcy and leading it to success.
