Optical fiber, Open Fiber successfully tests the 50G-PON technology: speeds of up to 50 Gigabits per second

Open Fiber ushers in the new era of 50 Gbps fiber G-PON, a high-speed optical network technology used to provide broadband services to domestic users and small and medium-sized businesses

Optical fiber, Open Fiber successfully tests the 50G-PON technology: speeds of up to 50 Gigabits per second

The doors open to 50 Giga optical fiber. Open Fiber is among the first companies in Italy to have tested the new broadband access service 50G-PON, with which it is possible to reach a speed on the access network of up to 50 Gigabits per second (500 times 100Mbps). The results of the tests carried out show "the great potential of this technological upgrade in terms of bandwidth and latency times of a few tens of microseconds", explains the company in a note, adding that "the experimentation also demonstrated" the "possibility of make the new 50 gigabyte service travel in parallel, and without interference, to the services already offered by the company (XGS-PON or 10GB)”.

"Open Fiber has always been a pioneer in the search for cutting-edge technological solutions that allow ever greater capacities and speeds in data transmission - said Guido Bertinetti, Director Network & Operations -. The success of this trial will allow us in a short time to provide partner operators with a new standard to offer to their customers, companies and public administrations capable of supporting the most advanced digital services of today and those of the future".

50G-PON technology: what is it?

50G – PON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network), is a new generation PON technology that supports multiple application scenarios as well as providing access to ultra broadband for homes. It offers high bandwidth, low latency, low jitter and accurate synchronization. All fundamental features for providing innovative services such as 5G, Cloud VR, telemedicine and intelligent production, from home automation to assisted driving, from the Metaverse to AI.

Monthly traffic on the fixed network is growing: +87% compared to 2019

These features will be essential to continue to meet user needs in terms of quality of experience and speed that are constantly and rapidly growing: the Agcom report 2022 shows that the average monthly traffic per user on fixed network has undergone an increase of 87% compared to 2019.

Furthermore, this new technological frontier will open up a series of new service scenarios and will be decisive in the binding of the access network elements of 5G mobile networks. In fact, the new generation mobile networks need a densification of the transmission antennas (microcells) and a large transmission capacity of the networks themselves. Thanks to the 50G-PON technology and the capillarity of the PON network, the access network FTTH becomes a platform that allows fixed-mobile convergence to be achieved, becoming an important enabler for new applications that will travel on the 5G network.
